Often with books like these, I find myself intimidated because I’m not sure if I will enjoy or understand its contents within. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case with Oscar Phillips, who really has a true art for storytelling. Oscar Phillips could write a refrigerator manual and anyone that picked it up would be intrigued. Philosophical issues are often heavy and intimidating for readers, making them topics that are left unread. Oscar Phillips does a wonderful job at keeping the reader entertained while keeping them well informed at the same time. This is done in a wonderful, storytelling way and not a preachy, patronizing manner. The public often steers clear of the discussion of religion, racism, politics, and other topics that seem taboo because they might upset or offend someone within the discussion. Phillips breaks the wall that the public puts up around these topics of discussions and shows that these topics can be discussed in well-meaning manners without the need or point of offending, but with the sole point of educating. After all, those that don’t want to discuss these topics, or want them to be discussed, are either hiding the truth or don’t want any truth to come to light as it may be too hard a truth to bare. Phillips shows that discussion of these topics is important in and of themselves, and that they are not topics to be afraid of. Truly a wonderful storyteller for important topics.

In general, I have never really considered myself political. As the author mentions in his introduction, most young people are not politically-inclined or simply are influenced by their parents when it comes to political affiliations and opinions. That being said, I learned a lot from Phillips in this level-headed, point-blank approach to explaining the true differences between the Right and the Left and hashing out the misconceptions and myths that surround both parties. With so much information bias and social media agendas today, it truly is difficult to know the facts, but it’s pretty clear Phillips has done his research not only from watching how our country has changed from the 1960s until now, but by studying political endeavors endlessly. Even if you don’t completely agree with his stance, Phillips makes an excellent point several times that we should be able to have healthy conversations and debates amongst each other in order to achieve better policies and compromises for the greater good, but instead we have so much division and short-sightedness based on “taking sides” or going along with a side just to not feel ostracized by peers. This I could absolutely relate to; but I agree with him that our freedom of speech should allow us to have a “freedom to be wrong,” as the author states. Despite Phillips leaning conservative, I didn’t feel like politics or a specific agenda were being stuffed in my face in this read – just an enlightening and refreshing perspective that I think everyone should give a chance.

It’s a fun yet insightful journey into the mind of someone who dares to be different, and that’s something I found both relatable and refreshing.

This book is exactly what it markets itself as. For anyone who ever felt academic, peer-reviewed research was simply liberal hogwash or found such books too difficult to read, I recommend this book. It will likely confirm every sneaking suspicion you've had towards the left and leave you feeling understood. Things begin (after an acknowledgement thanking himself. Riotous!) with an account of the author's youth, setting the stage for how his ideology would develop up to the present. We are subsequently led down a meandering mish-mash of topics which never offer up a dull moment. The author makes sure to capitalize many words--similar to what Trump did in his tweets--jolting awake any who might have fallen into a snooze. What I mean is, if you're not someone who usually likes to read books, I think you'll find the author's rhetorical strategies very helpful. Even for those who disagree politically, this book offers over 400 pages of insight into a mode of thinking shared by nearly half the country. In this sense, it is important for understanding our fellow man. My favorite chapter had to be the one on the Beatles being Jewish, with dozens of their song titles being revealed to have actually had Jewish references before being white-washed. I haven't been this entertained by a book in a while. 5 stars and bravo!
